Staff Sergeant Amee Hernandez Waites | Legislator Susan A. Berland’s Honoree | Branch of Service: Army

Born in the Bronx and raised in Bay Shore, Staff Sergeant Amee Hernandez Waites pursued her career soon after graduating Brentwood High School in 1992, enlisting in the United States Army at 17. She has served in the U.S. Army for over 28 years, currently serving at Fort Totten, NY with the 237th Support Maintenance Company.
Beyond serving her country throughout her career within the U.S. Army, she has played a major role in the humanitarian relief efforts in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria and during the ongoing earthquakes. Answering a call from within to help and support the people of her family’s homeland, she coordinated efforts to transport shipments of water, food, and emergency supplies. She was critical in collecting over 600 pallets during Hurricane Maria and over 40 pallets during the earthquakes.
Staff Sergeant Hernandez along with her partner and team have continued to serve not only abroad but the local community. During the COVID-19 pandemic the team distributed over 15,000 bagels donated by Bagel Chalet to first responders throughout Suffolk County, distributed masks and hand sanitizer to those in need and delivered groceries to senior citizens.
In May, she planned her 18th trip with members of her team to deliver tablets and computers to a school for children with Down Syndrome in Puerto Rico. Contributions and donations were made by local community members and through events held to raise funding for the cause.
Staff Sergeant Hernandez believes this is part of being a soldier and offering selfless service. Her inspiration to do this work is her family, the people of the United States, and all those in need. She is grateful and recognizes the amazing team she works with who share her vision, heart, and intent and looks forward to continuing her efforts to support local community members.
