Acosta photoDr. Juan Acosta is the Associate Director of the Emergency Department at Saint Catherine of Siena Medical Center and has a long history of involvement with prehospital care and medical education. He graduated from the St Vincent’s Paramedic program in 1990 and worked for 10 years as a paramedic at Jamaica, Lutheran and Flushing Hospitals. He then went on to attend the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine and graduated in 1997 and naturally did his residency in emergency medicine at St. Barnabas Hospital, Bronx, NY. and also received a master’s in clinical investigation from Weill Cornell Medical College. He also completed a Health Policy Fellowship from Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine/New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine.  Dr. Acosta served on the Washington State Board of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery.  In addition, Dr. Acosta is Board Certified in Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine.

Dr. Acosta serves as the associate medical director for the emergency department at Saint Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown.  He is the chair of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics (P&T), member of the Infectious disease and Medication safety committees at the hospital.

He is also actively involved with the Disaster Medical Assistance Team, a reviewer for Continuing Education Coordinating Board for Emergency Medical Services, Journal of Emergency Medicine and a section editor for the West-JEM. Dr. Acosta is an oral board examiner for the American Osteopathic Board of Osteopathic Emergency Medicine.  He has served as secretary and board member for the American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians and also served on the FOEM board of Directors from January 2007 through January 2009 and became The FOEM President from January 2009 through April 2013.

He is presently the secretary/treasurer for the Assembly of Osteopathic Graduate Medical Educators, a member of the AACOM Diversity Council and we recently appointed as co-chair of the Diversity Task force for the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA). Dr. Acosta also serves on various American Osteopathic Association committees such as the Committee on Continuing Medical Education and is presently serving on the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation. Dr. Acosta is also the Medical Director for the Central Islip Hauppauge Volunteer Ambulance, on the Suffolk REMAC and is a deputy County Fire Coordinator and a Disaster Medical response Team (DMRT) member for Suffolk County. We are proud to have him as part of the Emergency Department Physician Team at Saint Catherine of Siena Medical Center.
