Dr. Nick Fitterman | Legislator William Spencer's Honoree

Legislator Spencer would like to nominate Dr. Nick Fitterman, MD, MACP, SFHM, the Executive Director of Huntington Hospital since 2018 and a Professor of Science at Hofstra’s Northwell School of Medicine.

Dr. Fitterman attended SUNY Stony Brook for his undergraduate degree in Biochemistry.  He obtained his medical degree at SUNY Downstate Medical School in Brooklyn and then completed a residency in Internal Medicine and a Chief Residency at Stony Brook University Hospital.

Dr. Fitterman came to Huntington Hospital after 14 years in private practice.  He founded the Hospital Medical Group at Huntington Hospital in 2006, served as the Director of the Department and led initiatives that resulted in statistically significant decreases in patient’s length of stay, mortality, and a decrease in readmissions.  He was appointed Chief of Staff in 2009.

Dr. Fitterman has held leadership positions in several national societies, was recognized on the Honor Roll of Top Hospitalists in 2008 and has co-authored more than 35 publications in peer review journals.  He also served as a co-chair of the American College of Physicians Clinical Guidelines Committee, which promulgates evidence based guidelines for Internal Medicine.  In May, 2013, Northwell Health created a Hospital Medicine service line and Dr. Fitterman was appointed as Vice Chair of this service, overseeing 15 Hospital Medicine programs providing services throughout the Northwell Health system.   The service line grew from 180 to 360 physicians and he helped standardize operations and clinical care across these programs.

Since Dr. Fitterman was appointed Executive Director of Huntington Hospital, it has gone on to be recognized as the best community hospital in New York State by US News and World Report and was awarded the coveted 5 stars in quality by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid services in 2021, becoming the first hospital in Suffolk County and the first in the Northwell system to achieve this prestigious ranking. 

Legislator Spencer chose Dr. Nick Fitterman for his calm and steady leadership and for the emotional support he provided as the hospital navigated through an unprecedented health crisis – the COVID-19 pandemic.  Dr. Fitterman graciously agreed to accept this recognition on behalf of all the great men and women who worked day in and day out –the doctors, the nurses and all the support staff.  They are all heroes!
