About Sam

Sam Gonzalez was elected to the Suffolk County Legislature, 9th Legislative District March 19, 2019 and took his oath of office on March 26, 2019. The 9th Legislative District covers the areas of Brentwood, Central Islip, and North Bay Shore. Sam is currently Chairman of the Suffolk County Legislature’s Education & Human Services Committee, and member of the Veterans Committee, Seniors & Consumer Protection Committee, Government Operations, Personnel, Information Technology and Housing Committee, and Public Safety Committee. 

Born in Brooklyn New York, Sam has spent his career as a labor advocate fighting for workers across New York State. He started his career in labor as a shop steward with the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU), and was promoted to lead organizer. 

Recognized for his ability to inspire and lead, he was recruited by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) in 2012. Sam currently serves as President of the IBEW, local 1430, where he is the lead negotiator for the union in contract talks with major corporations in the United States. Furthermore, Sam spearheads many of the union’s organizing drives across the state.

With more than 36 years of experience in the labor movement, Sam has proven to be an exceptional leader; dedicated to charting a new course for the labor movement in New York City and beyond. 

Sam has been actively involved in the Long Island community, serving as both an activist and advocate for the town of Brentwood, Central Islip, and North Bay Shore. Sam is also a proud graduate of the Rutgers NJ-AFL-CIO labor candidate school. Sam resides in Brentwood where he is an active member of the Brentwood Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club and the Knights of Columbus, and a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather.
