Suffolk County Legislator Susan A. Berland, Chairwoman of the Legislature’s Veterans Committee, attended a community fundraising event hosted by The Art League of Long Island in collaboration with the Suffolk County Council VFW to raise funds to end hunger and food insecurity in Suffolk County’s veteran community. Guests were asked to contribute $20, the proceeds of which were donated to the Suffolk County Council VFW, and in return were able to select a handcrafted ceramic bowl to take home as a reminder of those who continue to struggle with hunger and food insecurity.
“Empty Bowls” began almost 30 years ago as a charitable event hosted by artists and students in Michigan and has become a grassroots movement in communities throughout the world.
“It was my pleasure join with The Art League of Long Island, the Suffolk County Council VFW, State Senator Jim Gaughran and members of our community to bring attention to the issue of food insecurity for our veterans,” said Suffolk County Legislator Susan A. Berland. “I want to thank The Art League of Long Island for hosting this wonderful event to benefit the Suffolk County Council VFW which works tirelessly to assist veterans and their families.”
