“Legislator Piccirillo attends unconventional Elementary School Graduations to support our youth”
As the 2020 school year came to a close, the School Districts within the 8th Legislative District decided to honor their Elementary School Graduates with unconventional graduations. These graduations ranged from digital zoom graduations, to drive through celebrations. Each graduation was thoughtfully planned by the School District, with the children’s happiness and safety in mind.
Legislator Piccirillo was honored to have attended more than a half dozen drive through graduations in addition to many congratulatory video messages that were sent to the elementary schools. “I was really happy to do what I could to support our future leaders as they graduated from Elementary School” said Legislator Piccirillo. This school year was especially difficult for these students. As traditional in person learning was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, students never had the opportunity to say goodbye. If it weren’t for the graduations the students might never have had the opportunity to return to their elementary school and say goodbye to their friends, teachers and staff. “Although the past few months have been hard on all of us, these young scholars had to make a transition in the middle of the school year; they faced many obstacles head on, and deserve to be celebrated” said the Legislator.
“When I was invited to attend the Elementary School graduations, I knew I had to participate anyway I could” said Legislator Piccirillo. “ I wanted the students, faculty, staff and parents to know that myself and the residents of the 8th Legislative District supported them and were cheering them on every step of the way” added the Legislator.
Drive through celebrations were put on by Sachem School District, Sayville School District, and Bayport Blue Point School District. Each drive through Graduation Celebration was unique in their one way. “The School Districts did a wonderful job putting together these drive through ceremonies” stated the Legislator. “The smiles on the children faces were priceless” added Piccirillo. Connetquot School District hosted virtual ceremonies for their students. Even though the graduations were not typical, the memories will last a lifetime. Congratulations to the 5th grade class of 2020!
