“Piccirillo passes Transition of Powers Bill with unanimous vote from Suffolk County Legislature”

On Wednesday September 9th, Legislator Anthony A. Piccirillo passed his third unanimous bill as Suffolk County Legislator. The Transition of Powers Bill, was introduced by Legislator Piccirillo shortly after he was sworn into office this year. IR 1268 which received bipartisan support; strengthens existing transition of powers laws, and adds it to the Suffolk County Code. The bill which was co-sponsored by Legislator Susan Berland and Legislator Tom Donnelly ensures that in future transition periods there will be a smooth transition of powers between Legislators.

“I am thrilled that my fellow Legislators supported this important piece of Legislation” said Legislator Piccirillo. The legislation outlines steps an outgoing Legislator must take during the transition period from one Legislator to another. “Although the Legislator may change, the office does not; and I believe that it is important we take steps to secure the office and its files so no constituents go underserved” stated the Legislator.

The Bill outlines a few steps that both incoming and outgoing Legislators must take to ensure a smooth transition. Some of these steps include handing the District Office keys over to the incoming Legislator five business days before the end of the transition period.  All open constituent cases and files must be handed to the incoming Legislator. The outgoing Legislator also must provide access to the District Office before December 1st of that year.

“I hope this bill ensures that no Legislator will inherit an empty office again” said Legislator Piccirillo. “I want to thank my colleagues from across the aisle who worked with me over the past six months to pass this important piece of legislation” added the freshman Legislator. The bill marks the third piece of legislation Legislator Piccirillo passed this year; all of his bills have passed unanimously.
