MOUNT SINAI, NY – On Monday, November 2nd, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker met with Mackenzie Crandell, a Longwood student and owner of Balloons by Mackenzie, to recognize and thank her for her efforts in raising money for breast cancer research. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Mackenzie set up a fundraiser donating $5 dollars to breast cancer research for every order she received with pink balloons.

“I want to thank Mackenzie for her initiative in starting a fundraiser through her business to benefit breast cancer research,” said Legislator Anker. “It is amazing to see how driven our young community members are and how dedicated they are to making a difference.”

“I was motivated to start this fundraiser because I wanted to show people that although it may be hard to see, there is still good in 2020,” said Mackenzie Crandell.

The month of October is recognized nationally as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The yearly campaign aims to raise awareness of breast cancer, raise funds for research to help find a cure and encourage women to get tested and to learn about the signs of breast cancer for early detection. This year, Mackenzie Crandell started her own business based in Middle Island, Balloons by Mackenzie, specializing in balloon arches for events. Mackenzie launched a fundraiser from her business’s Facebook page and encouraged her customers to order pink balloons or to donate to her fundraiser directly. Mackenzie donated $5 for every order containing pink balloons. By the last day in October, she raised $240.00, which was donated to the nonprofit organization Susan G. Komen.
