Legislator Gonzalez Honors Local Residents at 2nd Annual Black History Month Awards Celebration

2021 Black History Month

(BRENTWOOD, NY) – Recently Suffolk County Legislator Sam Gonzalez held his Second Annual Black History Month Awards celebration at the Brentwood High School. This year’s event honored outstanding individuals from the Ninth Legislative District for their personal and career achievements, positive influences, and community advocacy. 

 Legislator Gonzalez said, “This month allows us to commemorate the significant accomplishments African-Americans have contributed to our community as they have helped shape every aspect of our culture. I am proud to be representing such a diverse and influential community that takes tremendous pride in African -American progress and excellence through the years.” 

 The Legislator presented awards to six African-American citizens from his district. The Honorees were: 

  •  Alonzo Jacobs
  • Billy Moss
  • Sharon A. Dungee
  • Dr. Monique Darrisaw- Akil
  • Rev. Dr. Lawrence E. Mosely Jr. 
  • Keith Allison (Posthumously) 

 The event, available to view at https://www.facebook.com/legislatorsamgonzalez/ features videos submitted by elected officials, Ninth district community leaders, and youth celebrating Black history with songs and spoken word. New York State Attorney General Letitia James gave the program’s Keynote presentation on “Honoring Our Past and Inspiring Our Future”. 

 “Our Black History Month celebration provides us with an opportunity to personally thank these amazing, unsung African-American heroes for setting an example, uplifting the community, and bringing us closer together in the process,” said Legislator Gonzalez.
