Suffolk County Legislator Kara Hahn today recognized Dr. Lawrence Rocks of Stony Brook for being an “MVP on the fields of science and education.”
In 2019, the Long Island University professor emeritus became the first scientist ever featured on a Topps trading card in recognition of his research on the best temperature to throw a baseball. The free commemorative trading card issued through the “Topps of the Class Program” was offered to children willing to show their report cards as an incentive for educational achievement. The following year, Dr. Rocks served as a Topps Science and Literacy Ambassador to foster interest among school-aged children in the field of science.
Following his work with the Topps Company, Dr. Lawrence Rocks, this season, joined with the Upper Deck Company to create a WeatherStationMoon trading card - of which all proceeds will be donated to the New York Islanders Children’s Foundation - that highlights the need for a proposed unmanned station on the moon to better study weather patterns.
