Down Syndrome Day Press Conference

(BRENTWOOD N.Y.) – The Suffolk County Legislature unanimously approved Legislator Sam Gonzalez’s resolution designating March 21st as “Down Syndrome Awareness Day” at the June 8th General Meeting.

With over 400,000 people living in the United States with Down syndrome, it is fundamental to enforce equal opportunity within the Down syndrome community. Individuals with Down syndrome should have their goals and fullest potential within reach.

Introduction Resolution 1334 has designated March 21st as “Down Syndrome Awareness Day” in Suffolk County, which will begin in 2022. It will serve to encourage the Suffolk County residents to promote respect and inclusion of people with Down syndrome.

I am proud to designate March 21st as “Down Syndrome Awareness Day” here in Suffolk County to support those who work tirelessly with families, schools, healthcare professionals and government to help create opportunities, raise awareness and facilitate solutions for these valued members of our community,” said Legislator Gonzalez. These great individuals should have an equal opportunity to achieve their goals in order for them to reach their fullest-potential.

John Cronin of John’s Crazy Socks stated, “Do for others, follow your heart, follow your dreams show what you can do"

"World Down Syndrome Day is important because it shows everyone that people with Down syndrome can live the life they want,” said Brittany Schiavone of Brittnay’s Baskets of Hope.

Daniel Fletcher of TEAM USA Special Olympics said, “We are beautiful and smart and we are brave and have courage. We rise and rise above it all.”
