HAUPPAUGE, NY – At the June 22nd General Meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature, Majority Leader Susan A. Berland and her colleagues presented First Deputy Police Commissioner James Skopek with a County Proclamation signed by all 18 members of the Legislature in recognition of his retirement from the Suffolk County Police Department.
“First Deputy Commissioner Skopek has been a true asset to the department since joining the leadership team in 2018 and will be sorely missed by his colleagues and our community,” said Legislator Susan A. Berland. “We thank him for his 35 years of dedicated service in law enforcement and wish him all the best in retirement!”
“I had known James Skopek for many years before he joined our department and when I learned he was going to become our First Deputy Commissioner, I was confident that he would be a good fit,” said Suffolk County Police Acting Commissioner Stuart Cameron. “He brought more than three decades of law enforcement experience with him and he exceeded expectations with his knowledge and professionalism. His departure is a true loss for our department and for the people of Suffolk County.”
Mr. Skopek is a US Air Force Veteran and holds a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Business Administration from Long Island University. He began his career in law enforcement in 1986 as a Police Officer with the New York City Police Department and in 1987, he joined the ranks of the Nassau County Police Department where he spent the next 29 years. Throughout his tenure there, Mr. Skopek held many leadership positions, and ultimately finished his career with Nassau County as the Deputy Commanding Officer of the Homicide Squad. He also served as a Federal Task Force Supervisor assigned to the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force in the New York Office, Counter Terrorism Division. In June of 2018, Mr. Skopek joined the Suffolk County Police Department as First Deputy Police Commissioner. During his time with Suffolk County, he worked to enhance emergency preparedness procedures and to expand the Department’s response and mitigation of active shooter incidents, among other accomplishments.
