On Saturday, September 25th, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey partnered with the Lindenhurst Memorial Library and Rainbow Senior Center to host an educational Emergency Preparedness event.
Those that attended any portion of the three hour event, also dubbed a “Prepare-A-Thon,” received take home bags full of useful information and supplies on how to make an emergency plan and to manage a family through a natural disaster.
Participants were able to attend a series of lectures on safety and emergency preparedness. Presentations included Citizens Preparedness Corps training about emergency preparedness, disasters, evacuations, fire safety, basic first aid, and more from Dr. Margaret Sukhram, a volunteer with the American Red Cross; as well as animal care tips and how to keep your pets and other animals safe in an emergency from Sergeant Bob Platin at the Suffolk County SCPA; and conversation on “Long Island’s Power Grid: Storms, Challenges, and the Future” by Richard Murdocco, award-winning columnist & Adjunct Professor Stony Brook.
Other organizations also attended to provide literature and other giveaways in-between training sessions. They included the Lindenhurst Community Cares Coalition, Long Island Cares, Suffolk County Sheriff's Office, Suffolk County Police Department First Precinct Explorers, and Suffolk County Department of Fire, Rescue, and Emergency Services.
Legislator McCaffrey represents Suffolk County's 14th Legislative District which encompasses the Village of Lindenhurst, Babylon Village, the hamlets of West Babylon and North Lindenhurst, portions of Copiague, North Babylon and Babylon's barrier beach communities.
