Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly joined enthusiastic South Huntington School District students on Wednesday morning March 2 at Countrywood Primary Center in Huntington Station for “Community Read-In Day.” The event was held in conjunction with Dr. Seuss’ birthday, known as “Read Across America Day.”
After being welcomed by Signal Hill Principal Mitchell Levy and Assistant Principal Kellie Njenga and selecting a book, Legislator Donnelly, other local elected officials and community leaders were each escorted by two students to their “assigned” classrooms where they were eagerly greeted. Legislator Donnelly was the guest reader for the second graders in Mr. Daniel Campbell’s class. After answering questions from the students about his job and learning more about them, Legislator Donnelly read “Too Many Toys” by David Shannon which was then followed by a lively exchange about the book.
“I thank the Countrywood community for inviting me to be a part of this wonderful reading event. It was great to be back in the classroom and see the smiles on their faces,” said Legislator Donnelly. “I was impressed by how enthusiastic and engaged the students were and applaud everyone who helped make ‘Community Read-In Day’ exciting and educational for all.”
