BABYLON, NY: On Tuesday, May 3rd, Presiding Officer of the Suffolk County Legislature Kevin McCaffrey had the pleasure of addressing a delegation of young men from the Babylon area who have been selected to attend the American Legion’s Boys' State of New York program later this summer.
McCaffrey encouraged the attendees to remember that being in government and public service is not about you, but what you can give back to those you serve. “Listening to the public and all your peers, regardless of their side of the aisle, is crucial.”
American Legion Boys’ State is a week-long program that immerses high school youth completing their junior year in citizenship and leadership training. They learn the practical aspects of government as it exists in New York State, and come to recognize that the individual is integral to the character and success of government. They also participate in physical fitness, team work and other activities under the guidance of American Legion counselors and U.S. Marines.
