HAUPPAUGE, NY - Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today was joined by Suffolk County Presiding Officer Kevin McCaffrey, Deputy Presiding Officer Steve Flotteron, Majority Leader Nick Caracappa and Legislators Stephanie Bontempi, Dominick Thorne and Leslie Kennedy as he signed into law new term limits for some county officials.
The bill, introduced by Legislator Bontempi and co-sponsored by Legislator James Mazzarella, limits holding the office of County Executive, Legislator or Comptroller to 12 years total, without the terms being consecutive.
Majority Leader, Legislator Nick Caracappa stated, “It’s an indisputable fact that the people of Suffolk County want term limits for elected officials. They voted for that Bill to be enacted into law and the only reason we are bringing this legislation back to the people is because one party candidate tried to circumvent the will of the people by manipulating language that may have been a little vague. With this amended version of the Term Limits Bill, there will be no question as to the clarity of the languages true intent.”
The legislation was unanimously passed in a bipartisan fashion by the Suffolk County Legislature. Voters have the opportunity to accept the new term limit law in a referendum vote in November.
