A major piece of legislation by Legislator Leslie Kennedy stiffening the penalties against street contests, drag races and side shows advanced past the Suffolk County Legislature with sweeping bipartisan support.
After productive input with community stakeholders in the afflicted areas, Legislator Leslie Kennedy collaborated with the Suffolk County Police, community groups and neighborhoods under duress to find a workable solution. While New York law limits what can be done by counties, the penalties sought are near the harshest.
“As long as the police witness the incident, they will be able to impound the car under the first offense. Finally, our officers have a tool to combat a constant source of nuisance noise and safety concerns,” said Legislator Leslie Kennedy.
Violators can also face steep fines and jail time for even just attending an illegal street event.
“We are not against the sport,” stressed Legislator Leslie Kennedy. “Long Islanders need a legal place to drag race, emphasis on ‘legal.’”
