Legislator Steven J. Flotteron recognized Kay Erwood, Keep Islip Clean (KIC) Chairman Emeritus (one of the founding members) and Islip Commissioner, at their General Meeting in the Ballroom of Brookwood Hall in East Islip. Ms. Erwood has remained actively involved since KIC’s founding in 1989. She organized KIC’s inaugural Earth Day cleanup, which continues to this day as the upcoming 34th Annual Brook Street Wetlands Cleanup. One of her proudest achievements is the establishment of the Islip Middle School KIC Club. As students graduated Middle School, their interest continued and so the Islip High School KIC Club was established. Ms. Erwood mentored an Islip Middle School KIC Club student, who is now the current Chairman of Keep Islip Clean. Another achievement was her work saving Islip Beach from development more than 20 years ago. She has also been involved in the yearly beautification at the Beach, including the planting of 2,000 daffodil bulbs at the flag circle, pavilion and entry.
