WADING RIVER, NY – Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker recently presented the Wading River Historical Society with a $7,586 grant, which is awarded to organizations that benefit tourism and/or cultural programming in Suffolk County. The grant will be utilized for community outreach regarding the organization’s upcoming events and updates.
“I want to thank the Wading River Historical Society for their tireless work that enables our community to celebrate and learn about our local history,” said Legislator Sarah Anker. “It is thanks to the organization’s dedication to the preservation of the History of Wading River that the History House is well maintained.”
Wading River Historical Society has been the keeper of the small village’s history for over 75 years. Formed in 1947, the Society had its beginnings at a meeting in the Wading River Congregational Church on January 5 of that year, where it was formally established and its constitution adopted. In the early 1950s, the Society negotiated to acquire the home, believed to have been built in 1826, of Mary Raynor Howell, for the purpose of housing the Society. The deed to the property was presented on July 11, 1952.
The Society maintains the History House, which features local artifacts, farm tools, vintage clothing, historical documents, and books on local history and genealogy, and it hosts visits of school children and individuals by appointment.
