A special meeting of
the Suffolk County Legislature was
held last week where they unanimously voted to extend “A Local Law to Extend
the Property Tax Exemption” for Cold War Veterans. In 2008, Legislator Steven
J. Flotteron, while serving as a Councilman with the Town of Islip, was honored
to sponsor this legislation for the first time. Suffolk County adopted their
version and combined with the Town portion to provide additional savings for a
ten year period. The County did not want these Veterans to lose this valuable
benefit.
“It is important to
take care of our Veterans, in any way we can. Now, as a County Legislator, I am
privileged to be able to help in extending
these benefits for the Veterans of Suffolk County,” said Legislator Flotteron.
Those eligible for this
exemption are Veterans who served on active duty for more than 365 days in any
of the U.S. Armed Forces during a time of peace between September 2, 1945 and
December 26, 1991, have been honorably discharged and have been awarded the
Cold War recognition certificate. Also eligible are spouses of Cold War
Veterans and the “un-remarried” surviving spouses of deceased Cold War
Veterans.
