July 25th, 2017 – On Saturday, AMVETs Post 48 in Ronkonkoma celebrated the service of Harold Chapman who served as National Commander of AMVETs with a Barbeque and recognition ceremony, Legislator Leslie Kennedy (R-Nesconset) along with other elected officials, took part in this celebration to honor Harold Chapman. AMVETs, which stands for American Veterans is an organization formed by World War II veterans and it is run and lead by volunteers. The stated goal of the organization is to advocate for veterans and their families, AMVETs is the largest Veteran organization in the United States. Each year AMVETs presents the Silver Helmet Awards to a well deserving military veteran. The award is to "recognize excellence and achievement in Americanism, defense, rehabilitation, congressional service and other fields."
Harold Chapman served in the Air Force during the Vietman War. When he came back to the United States he became active in his local AMVETs Post in East Islip. He rose through the ranks of AMVETs to the level of Commander of Post 18 in East Islip, and eventually he became Commander of the national organization. During his service to the AMVETs he has worked tirelessly to ensure every American Veteran was included, remembered and assisted throughout, dedicating himself to veterans all over the nation.
“I am very thankful for Harold Chapman’s sacrificial service to our Country, and his service rendered to our veterans since he has returned,” said Legislator Kennedy. “Harold performed his duties as National Commander of AMVETs flawlessly.”
