The Annual Elizabeth T.
McNamee Memorial 5K Run in West Islip organized its 20th and last race on Sunday, May 13th. Legislator Steven J. Flotteron was honored to run in support of Elizabeth who in her final year at NYU Law School suddenly died of a disease known as Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM). People with HCM are generally able to lead normal lives. However, some cases can become serious. HCM occurs in about one in every 500 people in the United States.
Her mother, Maria (pictured with Legislator Flotteron), established the fund to help increase awareness and educate the public and healthcare professionals about the disease while giving support to families and individuals affected by it. In addition, funds have been distributed to scholarship programs, community projects and various foundations benefitting childhood disease.
